By Ben Deatherage, The Saturday July 14th event was another great race for the Grays Harbor Raceway for Pepsi Sampling Night. Classifications on hand were the return of the DirtCar Super Late Models along with the USRA Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, and Hornets at the 3/8 mile oval located in Elma. Also the results for July 7th event will be posted below in the race summary section.
Teenager Justin Duty of Happy Valley, Oregon was looking for his first career win with the DirtCar Super Late Models and looked to be fast in the early stages but would lose the lead to Joey Tanner of Portland, Oregon. Working his way up from the back of the field Trevor Glaser of Tangent, Oregon would take over the lead from Tanner as well as go on to win the race. It would add to Glaser’s victory the night before in his home state of Oregon at the Willamette Speedway in Lebanon.
Justin Duty’s father John, also from Happy Valley, Oregon, would finish in second followed by Joey Tanner. Two other Oregon drivers would complete the top five with John Campos of Keizer scored as the fourth place finisher over Portland’s Brian Cronk. John Duty was quick time in time trials at 14.430 seconds and heat races were ran in two sets and Trevor Glaser was only driver to sweep his group and Joey Tanner and John Duty were the other heat winners in the other group.
Fans were treated to another thrilling USRA feature as a fantastic see-saw battle occurred for most of the race for the lead between Craig Moore, Lawrence O’Conner, and Joe German. Moore the Seabeck driver earned the race lead early then lost it only to regain the front spot on lap twenty-four and go on for his first win of the season.
Jeff Foster of McCleary finished in second followed by Joe German of Aberdeen. Port Hardy, British Columbia native Lawrence O’Conner would finish in fourth place followed by Hoquiam’s Zack Simpson. Fast time in qualifications went to Foster at 15.865 seconds while heat winners were Lawrence O’Conner, Craig Moore, and Tom Sweatman from Cosmopolis.
Jason Tole of Hoquiam won his fifth Hobby Stock feature of 2012 Saturday night by leading the entire distance. Out of eight features for the class there have only been two winners with Tole leading the count over Brian Harding of Oakville who has won three times this year.
Jack Parshall, also from Hoquiam, would finish in a close and respectable second place followed by Eddie Blood of Olympia. Shane Kerrigan from Aberdeen was the fourth place finisher followed by Spanaway’s Tommy Hecker in fifth. Fast time went to Jack Parshall at a time of 17.236 seconds which set a new track record and the heat races were won by Jason St. Paul of Shelton, Spanaway’s Timothy Phillips, and Jason Tole.
Zack Floreck won his second feature of the season in the Hornets. Shane Norton, Austin Kerrigan, Chad Norton, and Jake Mills completed the top five. Hornet heat race winners were Shane Norton and Zack Floreck.
