Lewis & Mann Both Winners

June 10, 2012, by sellsworth - Interstate Batteries twin 50-lap mains on the BIG track at Evergreen Speedway on Saturday June 9 for the Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Whelen All American Series I-5 Challenge Super Late Models drew another good car count. Gary Lewis won the first main and Kelly Mann won the second. The visiting West Coast Street Stock Series brought a full field and Ron Stewart won the 50-lap main on the 3/8-mile. Jon Roberts kept his point lead with another win in the Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stock division. The Interstate Batteries Hornet Nationals 50-lap main was won by Josh LaPlante. The weather cooperated and another night of the pits being full of cars with the stands full of fans.

In race one of the twin 50’s Lewis took the lead on lap 8 on the BIG track the 5/8-mile. Second place finisher Daniel Moore made it interesting by swapping the lead a few times but Lewis was not to be denied his first win at his home track in few years. Third place went to Naima Lang.

Mann the winner of race two started his night on a sour note with mechanical problems in race one that looked terminal. Heading to the pits on lap 4 with smoke billowing from the car it looked like the night as over. The crew went to work and by race two the car was repaired and ran like the same car that set a new track record in earlier qualifying. On fresher tires Mann quickly took the lead from Lewis on lap 10 and never had anyone that could stay with him. Lang took second just ahead of Jeff Knight.

The WCSSS brought a group of formidable street stock racers. The main on the 3/8-mile oval kept everyone in suspense with the top five cars all capable of pulling into victory lane. Early on it looked like it would be Zack Beaman. With six laps remaining of the 50-lap main Beaman made a slight mistake and winner Stewart was in position to capitalize. Even then it was still questionable on whether Stewart would hold on, with point leader Kim Winnerberg directly behind. Winnerberg made a couple of attempts to take the lead but Stewart held on for the win. Beaman finished third.

Mini-Stock point leader Roberts picked up his third win in four starts this season. Methodically worming his way through traffic Roberts had the lead by lap 16 of the 30-lap main. Kris Hariss tried valiantly to catch Roberts and had to settle for second. Dale Creager overcame damage suffered in an earlier heat race to take home the third place trophy.

LaPlante won his second main of the season in the Hornet 50-lap main. Taking the lead on lap 13, LaPlante was not to be denied the win. Second place went to Mark Hubbard and third to point leader 15-year old Chad Fitzpatrick.

Next up at the ‘Northwest Center of Racing’ Evergreen Speedway the ‘Super Speedway of the West’ on Saturday June 16 is the annual 60 Minutes of FEAR. Super Figure Eights for 60-minutes on the west coast’s fastest figure eight track.
